Bear Down Buzz - March 2018

March 2018

Coming in April, visitors to the University of Arizona will find a campus legend permanently stationed outside McKale Center. A statue of legendary men's basketball coach Lute Olson is set to be installed on the Eddie Lynch Pavilion, just north of the Jim Click Hall of Champions.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer served as head coach at the UA for 24 seasons. In that time he amassed a 589-187 (.759) record. He led the Wildcats to the 1997 National Championship, four Final Four appearances, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and 11 Pac-10 titles, while earning Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors seven times. Olson also guided Arizona to 20 consecutive 20-win seasons.

"We're thrilled to recognize Coach Olson, not just for what he accomplished on the basketball court, but for what he means to Arizona and our community," Director of Athletics Dave Heeke said. "Through the success of Arizona basketball, Lute helped introduce people around the country to our university and this city, and he forever changed the trajectory and perception of our athletics department. His legendary status is worthy of this honor, and we're proud that his statue will be visible to the thousands of people that visit McKale on a yearly basis."

The bulk of the statue project is funded through private donations. You can contribute to the project by clicking HERE.

A senior diver from Castle Rock, Colo., Kaitlin Costello is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree who has competed on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform during her career.

What has been a highlight for you so far in 2017-18, your senior season?
I think the biggest highlight of this season was going to Pac 12s with the women's team. It's always a fun meet but being a senior this year just made it so special and definitely a memory I will never forget.

What's one of your favorite memories of being a student-athlete at the University of Arizona?
I think my favorite memories from my time here are the fun, random times with my teammates that someone does something silly and we all laugh about it. Those little moments will be treasured forever.

What makes Arizona Athletics unique?
Arizona is unique because of how much the staff cares about each and every athlete. I have yet to meet a staff member who I felt didn't care about me, my athletic career, or my future. They all care so deeply and that makes you want to try your best and push through the hard days even when you want to quit.

How important is the support of the Wildcat Club?
The Wildcat Club is so vital to the success of Arizona's athletic teams. Without it, we would not have the resources we need for success. Whether that be for academics or sport specific resources, they are all so important to us and we all greatly appreciate the support.

As an extra thank you to our dedicated Wildcat Club members, we are happy to provide special reserved parking for baseball season ticket holders at the Diamond, Platinum and Golden membership levels beginning with the first home Pac-12 game on Friday, March 23 through the conclusion of the regular season (May 19) – a total of 20 games!

Eligible members received a parking permit in the mail earlier this month and must show the pass to park in the reserved area. It is located in the main parking lot of Hi Corbett field near the Left Field Grandstands by Gate 7. Parking is not guaranteed; it is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendants will secure and monitor the area beginning two hours prior to game time until 15 minutes after first pitch.

Other free parking options include:
• Parking lots of Hi Corbett Field
• Reid Park Zoo
• Lakeshore Lane (behind right field fence)
• Parallel street parking along the south side of Camino Campestre

There is also a designated pick-up/drop-off location for fans using rideshare apps, such as Uber, Lyft, etc.

In his second year as the head coach of Arizona men's tennis, Clancy Shields has led the Wildcats to a hot start in 2018 and the program's highest ranking in years.

Why should fans come out to watch this year?
To start, this is the highest ranking we've had since 2012. The NCAA takes about the top 45 at-large teams, and we're sitting just a few spots outside of that. We haven't been to the NCAA tournament in 10 years. I think that's something exciting the fans can get behind.

I think being the highest-ranked team we've had here in five years shows we're trending in the right direction. We have a really young squad that's going to be here for the next three or four years together, so I'm excited about the future. We've gotten to 10 wins, which we haven't done in a few years, and we're only halfway through the season. We've got a great home schedule with the four California schools: Stanford, Cal, USC and UCLA coming in on our home courts. I think that's a treat for anybody here in Tucson.

What are the positives you've seen from the team, and what are the things you want to improve on?
The freshmen are growing daily. Every practice they're getting better; every match they're getting better. We're excited about that, seeing the transformation happening in front of our own eyes every day. We just have to get a little bit grittier, a little bit tougher, and build that expectation that we should win in our conference, and we should beat the teams from California that have been powerhouse tennis programs. Just changing the mindset is something we're working on here, and I think we're doing a better job of it. Once the guys see that they're good enough, and that we can do it, and we get our fans behind us, I think the guys will go out and beat some of those teams we haven't (traditionally) beaten.

How important is the Wildcat Club, and what do the donors mean to the program?
We wouldn't be able to do what we do without the support of the Wildcat Club. We don't get to do the things we do just by chance. I think all of our players recognize this – and our coaching staff – that it's an unbelievable opportunity to represent the University. The only way it's possible is through the donations of people who are generous and want to help our programs. We just say thank you for all the support, and we hope it continues. We can make tennis in our community a really strong thing, not just at the University, but in the Tucson community.

Coming this spring, University of Arizona football season ticket holders will have the ability to change seat location for their season tickets AND choose their own parking.

After the May 1 renewal deadline, season ticket holders who have renewed their tickets & Wildcat Club membership will have the opportunity to log into their account to see what seats are still available using interactive seating maps. They can then move locations and even add tickets.

Season ticket holders who are also Wildcat Club members and eligible for complimentary parking (Coaches level and above) can also choose their parking, based on what they are eligible for and what is available using an interactive map.

We are excited to offer this improvement in service to our loyal fans. Stay tuned for additional details about the process, tutorials, and more. And be sure to renew by the May 1 deadline to have the first opportunity to access the best seating and parking this football season!
