Football may seem like a long ways off, but it is on the top of high school students' minds who are signing national letters of intent next week. The University of Arizona will host a celebration of the 2017 football signing class in the Sands Club at the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility on Wednesday, February 1.
The event will feature appetizers, soft drinks, beer and wine. Coach Rich Rodriguez will share his thoughts on the new class and overall future of the football program and will participate in a Q&A with the fans. Plus, the Territorial Cup will be on display and available for fan photos. Doors open at 5:30 and the program begins at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $20 but 2016 football season ticket holders and Wildcat Club members can receive a 50% discount by using the promo code VIP17 during checkout. Purchase online here or by calling the McKale Ticket Office at 520-621-2287 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
What is your earliest tennis memory?
My dad used to be a tennis coach. I was playing tennis with him on our backyard court and my uncle, who's not a bad tennis player as well, came out and they started playing. My uncle beat my dad and my dad smashed the racket. So, that's my best tennis memory - that's what got me involved.
Do you have a pre-match ritual?
My pre-match ritual is a bit weird. I get up at 6 a.m. and have a shower and stretch, then go back to sleep, wake back up and have another shower. I usually have a coffee with breakfast, which is a bowl of rolled oats. And I usually listen to a lot of British rap. Grime is the genre.
What improvements are you hoping to make this season?
The aspect of my game I want to improve the most for the season is my net game and therefore transitioning to the net better. This is something that Coach Clancy talks about a lot with us, and for good reason.
Talk about new head coach Clancy Shields.
He brings a lot of energy to the program. The energy that he brings to practice every day and his desire to win brings it out of us.
What are your goals for the team?
I think this team could do some great things this year if we are continually united and competitive. As a senior, I would like to provide leadership and support for the younger players, setting them up for future seasons.
What has the Wildcat Club meant to you?
The support of the Wildcat Club has been amazing during my time at Arizona. They have ensured that our facilities are up to the standard of other Pac-12 schools and I am continually amazed by their generosity. Recently, our program was fortunate to receive renovations to our team room, and a new scoreboard system. We are eternally grateful for their continued support and kindness.
If you didn’t make it to our very first Bear Down Bite last month, don’t worry: another one is in the works. Almost 90 Wildcat Club members attended the very first event, a $10 lunch in the Jim Click Hall of Champions, which featured a spirited Q&A with Head Baseball Coach Jay Johnson and Head Soccer Coach Tony Amato, plus student-athletes Cali Crisler, Gabi Stoian, Nick Quintana, Cameron Ming and Cesar Salazar. The group discussed the current state of their teams as well as other more personal and fun topics.
“What a marvelous event,” commented one Wildcat Club Member afterwards. “We will definitely attend the next one!”
