STUDENT-ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: JC CLONEY, BASEBALL
JC is pursuing his Master’s degree in journalism after receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology last May. The left-handed pitcher started 18 games last season for the Wildcats, including Game 1 of the College World Series Finals, in which he threw the first shutout in Finals history.
What was the experience in Omaha (at the College World Series) like last year, getting to be there with your teammates and compete at the highest level?
It was a lot of fun. It’s something everyone wants to be part of. Competing at the highest level is obviously one of the things we all strive for. It was a very fun atmosphere. The kids were my favorite part. They were constantly around us and wanting to hang out with us and do stuff with us. Overall, it was a surreal experience.
What are you most excited about at the start of this season?
I’m excited to see how good our team is. I think we have great talent. Once we come together as a team, we’re going to be a team that you need to look out for. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. Everyone is just itching to get out there and play. We’re starting to get tired of playing the intra-squad games. We want to see a different team and some fans in the stands.
How is it playing for Coach Johnson?
He really lets you do what you need to do. He’s not a real strict guy. He has his basic fundamental rules, which I think everyone does. But he lets you do what you need to do. Instead of completely changing things, he fine tunes them. Coach Lawn is the same way. It makes the game a lot more fun than being really strict.
You had a lot of success at Hi Corbett Field last year. What’s it like pitching there?
I think it’s just the atmosphere in general (that I respond to). When you put on those pinstripes, things change a little bit. You want to go out there and impress your fans and keep them coming back. You want to entertain them and give them a show. I think, especially during our series against ASU when we had over 8,000 people in attendance, it gives you a big adrenaline rush. It makes you want it even more. Even though you already want it a lot, (the fans) give you that little edge.
You wrote letters and called Wildcat Club members this winter to thank them for their support. Why was that important to you and what did you get out of it?
To me, it’s important because it’s us giving back. They give so much to us. They come out to games, they’re giving money, they’re giving us an experience of a lifetime. Taking time to show thanks to fans and Wildcat Club Members was a lot of fun, especially getting to talk to them and thank them. We had a lot of fun with it. I was in the room with Louis Boyd, Michael Flynn, Robby Medel and Kyle Lewis, and we were laughing, having great talks with supporters. It was just a great experience. I think the people really enjoyed us calling. We want to do stuff for them as bad as they want to do stuff for us.

COACHES CORNER: DAVE RUBIO, VOLLEYBALL HEAD COACH
Dave Rubio reached the quarter century mark as head coach of the UA volleyball program in 2016. His team made its 20th NCAA appearance, going 20-15 on the season.
You had a great season that ended in the Sweet 16 this year. What made this team special?
The players! We had a wonderful group of seniors who were both our hardest workers in the gym while also being our best leaders.
We celebrated your 25 years as Arizona’s head coach this year. What do you think about when you think of your quarter century as a Wildcat?
How fortunate I have been to work at the University of Arizona.
The National Title returned to the Pac-12 this year with Stanford taking home the championship. (UA beat Stanford in the regular season.) What has it been like competing in the Pac-10/12, the most accomplished conference in NCAA volleyball for decades, for almost your entire career?
In 2011, we beat UCLA at home and away. They too went on to win the National Championship that year. There is satisfaction in knowing you beat the best team in the country and there is disappointment in that we didn’t go further in the NCAA Tournament. Competing in this conference is like being in the NFL playoffs every week. Just brutal!
Three years ago, McKale Center underwent a renovation that seemed to transform the volleyball game day atmosphere at Arizona. What has that, plus the brand new locker room, done for your program?
I believe our presentation of volleyball is the best in the country. The scoreboard, the curtains and the floor scoreboard make it an unbelievable game experience for everyone.
How important is the support of the Wildcat Club to your program?
We wouldn’t be the same program. The Wildcat Club plays an instrumental role in our programs ability to function at a national level.
HOW TO TURN $1 MILLION INTO $2 MILLION
Last season, Arizona Baseball’s amazing run all the way to the College World Series Finals captivated and inspired Wildcat fans, including one generous donor who made an anonymous matching gift of $1 million. That means every dollar you give is matched until we reach the full pledge.
These gifts directly benefit the baseball program, including renovations to Hi Corbett Field, fan amenities and other improvements for student-athletes. For example, a gift of approximately $200 would replace a seat at Hi Corbett field! And with the matching gift, two seats can be replaced. This is just one example of the many improvements we'd like to make to improve the overall experience.
Accept the challenge and donate here today. Let’s reach this goal together!
